What is ADHD?

ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterised by persistent patterns of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that begin in childhood and affect daily functioning.

ADHD symptoms explained

Do I need an ADHD assessment?

An assessment may be worthwhile if long-standing difficulties with attention, organisation, restlessness or impulsivity are affecting work, study, relationships or home life — and appear to have been present since childhood.

About ADHD assessment

Not sure where to start?

Our free adult screening questionnaire (ASRS v1.1, WHO) takes about three minutes. It can indicate whether a specialist assessment may be worthwhile — it is a screening tool, not a diagnosis.

What happens after diagnosis?

You receive a written report with recommendations. Options may include information and support, workplace or educational adjustments and, where clinically appropriate, a medication assessment and titration.

Methodology

How ADHD Path assesses ADHD

NICE NG87 states that ADHD should be diagnosed only after a full clinical and psychosocial assessment — never from rating scales alone. Every ADHD Path assessment follows the same 11-step pathway.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a GP referral?

No. You can refer yourself for a private assessment. With your consent, we write to your GP afterwards.

Will I definitely get a diagnosis?

No. Our clinicians conduct a comprehensive assessment to determine whether you meet recognised diagnostic criteria for ADHD. Not meeting criteria is a valid outcome, and we explain other possible explanations.

Is an online ADHD test the same as an assessment?

No. Online questionnaires are screening tools. NICE is clear that ADHD should not be diagnosed from rating scales alone.

Can you prescribe medication?

Where ADHD is diagnosed and medication is clinically appropriate, a separate medication assessment and titration can be arranged. Medication is never guaranteed.

Will my GP take over prescribing?

Shared care arrangements are subject to individual GP practice agreement and cannot be guaranteed.

“Had two ops to remove facial warts - one of those jobs that the NHS won’t do because it’s just ‘cosmetic’. That’s not how it feels when you’ve got them! First class treatment at a reasonable cost and without delay. Highly recommend.”
